What’s Normal with Aging?

I’ve been told that I should see an eye doctor every year. My vision isn’t changing that quickly, so why do I need to go so often?

Many eye diseases like glaucoma or macular degeneration are asymptomatic until vision has already been lost. Small cataracts can increase your risk of a fall. Although these diseases aren’t part of normal aging, they occur frequently in older adults (see the Yellow Alerts section below). Seeing an ophthalmologist or optometrist every one to two years allows earlier detection and treatment of these diseases, decreasing vision loss and falls.
